Hello, humans! There is only one small and important thing that isn’t implementation details: business rules.

I like to say that I’m annoying… I really am! I worked a lot with nontechnical people and humans in general and also… I’m human (probably).

We, as humans, usually omit important details that we don’t think about. Sometimes they are really important and the current implementation could be as bad as it can be, but you can still forget all the hoops and loops you need for that important business rule to be met.

This is usually like people saying “Just go from A to E”.

Knowing that I’ll relentlessly ask over and over the same questions, changing the approach and making them think about it from different points of view until I’m satisfied (kinda like you do with ChatGPT to get a better answer).

This means asking “But what about the rest?” Getting an “Oh, yeah, there’s also C and sometimes D.” And then continue asking until you get the full picture, step as step, and more.

Business Rules

This is the only thing that is not a detail. It’s also at the core of whatever you’re doing and you should be spending as much time understanding it as you can.

The coding of business rules

Language, frameworks, and databases, or even if you’re gonna use coding at all… just details.

Then again, I’m also a programmer, and while sometimes you can just “throw people” at the problem, automating it is a more efficient way of doing things.

If you already have details like language, framework, or databases set, this, if anything should be as clear to understand as possible, and if you can test only one thing… let it be those rules.

While testing those rules, as long as you really try to “break” them, you can always find the equivalent case to the “bank example” where you can withdraw without having a balance. Any business rule will probably have something similar and testing usually give you a better insight on where to find those.

Relentlessly annoying

Then again, as the programmer, you probably don’t know all the rules.

I had already made the case, but I’ll repeat it here: you probably want some people who don’t know anything about the company, sector, or product in your team. Maybe even a couple that had never used something similar and even some “devil’s advocate” who might think it’s a "stupid idea”.

I’m not saying to have dissenters who will always oppose every decision, but people who will challenge assumptions, that will come from a new point of view. Those are people who will come with a beginner's mindset and/or make difficult questions that people from outside will also make.

Having that kind of people inside means that those questions were already answered and that your business rules, whatever they are, already account for that. Not only that, that kind of person can hold back a little of people too hyped to see obvious flaws. Basically akin to the writings advice of “killing your darlings”.

The implementation details

Whatever else and basically anything programmers love to talk and discuss… everything is just details.

When you hear that someone used Google Sheets as a database for the MVP of something… details. It worked until it couldn’t handle and then they changed.

Out there, you’ll still find someone using that approach and then think “What were they thinking?“ while cursing generations of people. Well, they were probably thinking: it works, it’s what I could do for now…

Details of the details

How they implemented is another talk entirely.

If they incarnated a pasta chef and served a big bowl of spaghetti, then go ahead and curse them!

After all, once you have the business rules clear, you still need everything else to support them. While a weak base can, has, and will bring down the best of the ideas, the best support will not make a bad idea suddenly good.

Everything coming together

This is actually a low bar to clear, once you have a good and solid idea with clear business rules. If you don’t challenge it as much as you can internally… you can end with something shiny but as fragile as glass, that someone will break.

After that, you just need something that will adequately support it and for most things, this doesn't mean much. It also means that you can use any language, any framework, and any database.

There might come a time or scale that “any” isn’t good enough, but as long as you remember that those are implementation “details”, then you know that they should be “replaceable” (which means clean code, good practices…).

Surprisingly, this is not obvious to all programmers!

Back to the example of the A to E, some programmers will jump to think of useless stuff like the details and forget to point out the obvious “But what’s between that?” Sometimes they just won’t see it, will code something that misses clear objectives, the “client” will not be happy and they will need to redo stuff.

This might also mean having to make more business rules fit inside support details meant for something smaller… and since nobody wants to redo everything again, they start with workarounds well… you probably know where this is going right?

Someone who accurately found that the rules are A, B, C.1, C.2, D.1, D.2, D.3, E and started in a Google Sheets already enclosing and separating concerns of what is a business rule and what is implementation details will go farther, faster and painlessly to something better than the one who got hyped on the “A to E” and with some luck added a “3” in the middle because it “made sense to them”.

Don’t be afraid to be annoying!

People might hate you. But that's better than wasting everyone's time on something that won’t bring that much value and/or having to redo or hack something to make it work afterward.

Recently I had to put my foot down. My contact point for what I’m working on wanted something for them but doing that would mean a lot of time used for something that you could just throw people at the problem initially, it was a problem but the next time it would be used would be only after several months.

So, instead of that, there were things that should be done before that couldn’t be done otherwise and would bring more value to the whole, although at the cost of not having what that one person wants.

This is a hard lesson because like others, the I in the past just started coding without having a clear picture of what were all the rules. I didn't know what was more important or what would bring more value.

There are, of course, times when you’re just handed down the what to do. But if you can, always asks for the why and then again and again until you have a clear view of whatever underlying business rules there are.

And after that, you know… just details…

Step 1 - Use the code from repo to create code build and lambda functions

use the file buildspec.yaml to create the code build project
and refer the policy file codebuild_role.json for the essential permissions required

create lambda function using lambda_function.py and the policy required lambda_iam_role.json

Step 2 - create event bridge and connect all the parts together

create an event bride rule to trigger when a pr status update change occurs

step 3 - raise a pr and test if Dockerfile is linted and comments are being added

once you raise pr in code commit the event bridge rule reacts to that. Lambda function runs and collects the information required to do the CI test/check. Starts the code build with the information as override parameters and environment values.
Then Code Build runs the hado lint on the Dockerfile adds the result to codecommit through aws cli commands.

This project is built as an example of how OpenAI's ChatCompletion API can be used in projects using NextJS.

Background (What made you decide to build this particular app? What inspired you?) 🎒

I was exploring new projects on twitter and dev.to when I stumbled upon a post in which he had developed a simple site with vanilla-js and it's sole job was generate twitter bios with the help of OpenAI API key. This inspired me to make this youtube script generator which is much more useful and also this marks the repository as a template/base for new developers that come along and see how it's done with Next.js!

This Project is built using the following resources...

• NextJS
• Refine
• Material UI
• OpenAI API
• Tailwind CSS

Honestly speaking, I didn't know Material UI was sooo great till now. After making this project I've see it's true potential and I'm gonna use Material UI in all my next projects.

HTTP

Whenever you type any URL in the browser, say https://google.com and hit enter, a request goes to the DNS server in order to get the IP address behind the domain name.
When the client gets the IP address, it establishes a TCP connection with the server on the cloud.

HTTP is based on client-server architecture, ie client requests for some data from the server, the server responds and then the connection is terminated.

HTTP is stateless. ie every time client wants to send data to server, it has to explicitly specify all the headers like cookie, authorization etc headers, so that the server can recognize it.
Benefit of being stateless is that the request by the client can be served by any server in our backend as there is no state established among the server and the client. This enables us to easily scale the system horizontally.

HTTP connections start with http://yoursite.com.

HTTP is an application layer protocol built on the top of TCP/IP.

Websockets

The Websocket protocol is stateful. It also used TCP under the hood.
Here, the connection is not terminated after request-response process, but it exist until one of the party has not closed the connection explicitly.

Websockets have low-latency, that is why they are used for realtime communication, chat applications, gaming etc.

Websocket connections start with ws://yoursite.com

Drawback: If a connection is established, we can't transfer the next request to other server because if we do so the state will be lost. Hence it creates problems while scaling.

3. Once subscribed, you will receive an API key. Keep it safe, as we'll use it in our Python script. 🔑

Now, let's create a Python script that uses CronWeb API to schedule a task to make a webhook request to our server on specified date and time. Here's an example:

Let's talk about something we all know when developing our project using React: Conditional Rendering.

When it comes to Conditional Rendering in React, there are multiple ways to implement it. One of the favorite ways among developers is using && operator.

Basically, if the condition is true, a HTML <p> element with a specific text will be displayed. Otherwise, it won't be rendered at all.

But have you ever checked all the possible values that can be true and false? If not, let's check out the results below!

As it turns out, not all falsy values give the expected result. It can be quite baffling! 🤯 This issue often arises when dealing with a Notification Badge.

You might think it's a minor problem, but guess what? Many developers simply forget to deal with it the right way!

Solutions

Luckily, I've got a handful of solutions for this issue.

1. Convert condition to Boolean

// All of them won't render anything ✅

You can handle this by using the Boolean(expression) function or the double NOT operator !!expression. These methods will convert any data type into a boolean value. As seen in the results above, both true and false work perfectly fine in this case.

2. Use Ternary operator

{NaN ? <p>😸</p> : null}

// 0
{0 ? <p>😸</p> : null}

// negative 0
{-0 ? <p>😸</p> : null}

// string
{"" ? <p>😸</p> : null}

// All of them won't render anything ✅

When the condition is falsy, you can use the ternary operator to return null instead.

I'm excited to introduce Daxus I've developed to the community. In this article, I would like to simply share with everyone the motivation behind creating Daxus.

First of all, Daxus is a server state management package that make developer have full control over their data such that they can build a single source of truth by themselves.

Someone may ask: why don't you just use React Query or SWR?

In my company, we use redux with async thunk to manage the server state and implement single source of truth by ourselves. Take post as example, suppose there are two lists contain the post with the same id. This post share the same reference in the redux. That is, if the user update this post, the two posts will update simultaneously, and we don't need to make an extra request to refetch the whole post lists.

React Query encourages us invalidate the query if we have some data updated, which means that we need to refetch the whole list. However, refetch the two list just because we update a single post seems wasteful. We hope that we don't need to refetch the lists, but the same post in the both list should update also.

I wish that I new about pyenv when I started to programming in Python.

This tool makes it easy to manage and switch between different Python versions and environments.

To install it make sure that all prerequisites are met. Then use the pyenv-installer project like this to get the tool installed:

curl https://pyenv.run | bash

When pyenv is available on your machine you can easily create a new virtual Python environment for your next project:

pyenv virtualenv 3.10.0 my_new_project

This will create a new environment named, my_new_project, that is using the version 3.10.0 of Python.

And to activate the environment:

The basis of many machine learning models used to make predictions today is statistics, from statistical analysis brings forth their implementation in the form of algorithms. In this article, we will look into one of sklearn’s supervised machine learning linear algorithms for predicting regression values, Linear Regression.

Understanding Linear Regression

Linear regression is based on the concept:

Y=C+M*X

Where C is the intercept of the plotted graph, it determines where the line touches the y-axis, Y is the target or predicted value and X represents the features, sometimes in the dataset X may vary in the sense that there may be more than one feature. Which leads to an equation.

Y=C+M1*X1+M2*X2….+Mn*Xn

The C and M are regarded as the bias in Machine Learning because it is added to the offset of all predictions that will be made.

To get the values of M.

Where Xi are the different input values of X used to predict Y. and Mean are the average values of the number of X inputs.

And to derive the value of the intercept c.

Creating the Model from Scratch

So we now have a brief review of how the model works, now to implement it.
We start by importing the numpy library as we would make use of it for some numerical calculations. We create the class LinearRegression and set some initialized parameters.

The class takes in the fit_intercept parameter which determines whether an intercept term would be included in the model. Its default value would be true. The coefficients and the intercept would be set as none for default values which would later be changed when the model is trained with data.

Next, we create a function ‘_add_intercept’ so that the model takes in the values of X and It creates an array of ones with the shape (X.shape[0], 1), representing the intercept term, and concatenates it with X along the y-axis.

Next, we create a function in the class that fits the data into the model and performs some algorithmic calculations. It uses a closed-form solution that involves the use of matrix operations. It first takes the parameters X and Y and if fit_intercept is set to True it passes X through the _add_intercept function to add an intercept term. Next is the algorithm to compute the values of the coefficients by getting the inverse of the dot products of X and the dot product of the transpose of X and get the dot product of those with y. Then if the fit_intercept function is True, it takes the first value in self.coef as the intercept, and the rest are the coefficients.

Next, we create predict function which takes in the value of X and if ‘fit_intercept’ is true it passes the values of X into the _add_intercept function and returns the dot product of X and the concatenated array of the intercept and coefficients.
